Batizovské pleso

Batizovské pleso is the only larger lake in the Batizovská Valley in the High Tatras. Every mountain lover will appreciate its location — it lies right at the foot of Gerlachovský štít, the highest peak not only of the High Tatras but of the entire Slovak Republic. The lake sits on the southern edge of the valley, right above the famous Tatra Magistrale trail.

Thanks to this location, Batizovské pleso offers unique scenery — a calm surface in the foreground, above which towers the majestic wall of Tatra peaks led by Gerlach. It is a place where one fully grasps the sheer size of the high mountains, and where it's worth stopping, taking a breath, and letting yourself be absorbed by the atmosphere of the high-mountain wilderness.

It is precisely its position on the Tatra Magistrale that makes the lake a rewarding destination. This popular long-distance hiking trail connects the most beautiful corners of the High Tatras and passes above several valleys, so a visit to Batizovské pleso can nicely combine with a longer traverse beneath the peaks. For hikers it's a pleasant resting spot with unforgettable views, and at the same time a reminder that the country's highest summit is right there to see.

Marked trails lead to the lake from sub-Tatra villages, and it's also possible to join it directly from the Magistrale. Since this is a high-mountain environment, the trip requires reasonable fitness and equipment, but the reward is worth it. If you want to experience the High Tatras without rushing, accommodation in one of the sub-Tatra villages gives you a comfortable base for several trips — one day to Batizovské pleso, another for further Tatra scenery, of which there is no shortage here.
