Kostolecká tiesňava

Kostolecká tiesňava is a nature reserve ranking among the most striking geological sights in this part of Slovakia. It lies within the cadastral territory of the villages of Kostolec and Záskalie in the Považská Bystrica district of the Trenčín region and forms part of the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. It was declared a nature reserve in 1970 over an area of 29.8 hectares and carries the highest, 4th and 5th degree of protection.

What makes it special is the gorge itself, which stands out geomorphologically from the rest of the range. It formed through the epigenetic downcutting of the Manín stream into a limestone crag — the water gradually deepened a narrow breakthrough gorge flanked by tall rock walls. Beneath them lies an extensive scree slope topped by a large rock overhang of folded limestone. Experts consider it a textbook example of water erosion and cliff-relief formation.

For visitors, the gorge is above all an experience of wild nature. The rock walls, narrow passage, and cliff relief enhance the aesthetic and natural value of the whole Manín area, one of the gems on the border between the Súľov and Strážov mountains. Walking through the gorge is a rewarding goal for hikers as well as geology and photography enthusiasts, who will appreciate the dramatic rock scenery packed into a relatively small area.
