Lietava (hrad)

Lietava, also known as Lietava Castle, ranks among the largest and best-preserved castle ruins not only in Slovakia but across Central Europe. It lies about 10 kilometers from Žilina, near the Cibuľník hill on the eastern edge of the Súľov Mountains, at an elevation of 635 m above sea level, on the cadastral boundary between the villages of Lietava and Lietavská Svinná.

Originally a Gothic-Renaissance castle, it covers a built-up area of roughly one hectare, making it a truly extensive complex. Its decline dates back to 1753, and the ruin then fell into disrepair for decades amid the surrounding forest. The turning point came in 1999, when the Association for the Rescue of Lietava Castle was founded — since 2003 it has been carefully stabilizing, conserving, and partially restoring the castle.

This very story of rescue is what makes Lietava such a special place. The castle remains a freely accessible ruin (except for the sections currently under works), and in part of the middle castle you can view an exhibition dedicated to the castle's history, its former owners, and archaeological finds. The path to the walls leads through a pleasant forest, rewarding visitors with the romantic atmosphere of the sprawling ruins and views over the surrounding countryside.

Lietava is perfect for a trip combined with hiking — it lies within easy reach of the Súľov Rocks, one of Slovakia's most beautiful rock formations.
