Skalka pri Trenčíne
Skalka nad Váhom
Skalka pri Trenčíne is a ruined monastery, also known as Veľká Skalka, located within the cadastral territory of the village of Opatová nad Váhom in the Trenčín district. It's an exceptional place — considered the oldest pilgrimage site in Slovakia. It also includes a small cave complex near the Váh river, linked to a legend about the hermit Saint Benedict, who is said to have lived in the cave.
Skalka's history reaches deep into the Middle Ages. The monastery was probably founded in the 12th century, and by 1224 a Benedictine abbey resided here. After 1528, imperial soldiers strengthened its fortifications, and from 1644 the monastery belonged to the Jesuit order. In the 18th century it was damaged by Kuruc troops, and after the Jesuit order was dissolved, the buildings gradually fell into decay. They remained in ruins until the 20th century, when they were reconstructed.
Today Skalka is a place where spiritual tradition meets the beauty of nature. The surrounding limestone rock formations are a popular destination for rock climbers, while the monastery grounds and cave attract pilgrims and tourists alike. A pilgrimage is held here every year for the feast of Saints Andrew-Svorad and Benedict, falling roughly in mid-July.
Skalka lies right above the Váh, just a short distance from Trenčín, so it's easy to combine with a visit to Trenčín Castle and other landmarks of the Považie region. If you plan a stay nearby, you can visit this peaceful pilgrimage site as a shorter trip and combine it with walks along the river or rock climbing. Accommodation in the Trenčín region makes Skalka a pleasant stop for pilgrims, tourists, and families alike.
