Strečno (hrad)

Strečno is a restored medieval castle ruin perched on a cliff 103 metres above the Váh River. It lies about 11 kilometres from Žilina, along the E50 road towards Martin, and together with the nearby Starhrad ruin forms a striking landmark at the entrance to the Strečno Gorge.

The castle has an irregular layout built up around a central core and has carried several names over the centuries — recorded as Strechun and Streczen before settling on today's Strečno. It is now listed among the national cultural monuments of the Slovak Republic and ranks among the best-known castles of the upper Váh region (Považie).

Visitors to Strečno get more than just a walk along the walls. The castle houses exhibitions of the Považie Museum in Žilina, tracing the history of both the castle and the wider region. But the real draw is the setting itself — the castle walls offer a striking view down into the Váh valley and across the surrounding slopes of the Malá Fatra mountains, through which the river carves a narrow, dramatic gorge.

Strečno sits right along the main road between Žilina and Vrútky towards the Turiec region, making it an easy stop on the way to other destinations. Below the castle lies the village of the same name, and the area is popular for rafting on the Váh and hiking in the Malá Fatra. To explore the region properly, accommodation around Žilina or Terchová makes an ideal base — the castle, the mountains and the river are all a short trip away, and one day is rarely enough to see it all.
