Súľov (hrad)

Súľov, also known as Súľov Castle, is the ruin of a former watch castle hidden high above the village of Súľov-Hradná, right in the heart of the Súľov Rocks, within the Strážovské Vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Historical sources also mention the site under other names, such as Roháč fortress or, briefly, Catherine's Castle.

As a watch castle, Súľov primarily served a defensive and monitoring role, keeping watch over the surrounding roads and access routes into the mountainous region. Today only modest wall remnants survive, but it is precisely their fusion with the crags that gives the place its unique charm. The castle doesn't stand on an open hill but is literally woven among the rock formations that made the entire Súľov Rocks famous.

A visit to Súľov comes with a walk through one of Slovakia's most beautiful rocky areas. The surrounding crags, towers, and rock windows attract hikers and photographers alike, and marked trails wind past bizarre formations to viewpoints overlooking the neighboring valleys. The path to the ruin is thus an experience in itself, blending history with striking nature.

The Súľov Rocks lie near Žilina and Bytča, so they combine well with other trips around the upper Váh region — for example to nearby Lietava. If you want to fully immerse yourself in this rocky paradise, staying right in Súľov-Hradná or nearby lets you set out on the loop early, while the rocks are still quiet and peaceful, and enjoy the trip without rushing.
