Vysoké Tatry

The Symbolic Cemetery by Popradské pleso is one of the most moving places in the entire High Tatras. It lies beneath the steep rock wall of the Ostrva peak, within sight of the picturesque Popradské pleso lake, and serves as a quiet memorial site dedicated to victims of the mountains.

Here you'll find memorial plaques bearing the names of people who died in the High Tatras, as well as in other mountain ranges around the world. The cemetery is thus not a classic burial ground but a symbolic remembrance — a place where climbers, hikers, and chance visitors pause for a moment to honor those for whom the mountains became fateful. This is precisely what gives it its exceptional atmosphere of humility and respect toward the high mountains.

Beyond its memorial significance, the site is also strikingly beautiful. The plaques and small memorials are sensitively set within the mountain forests and rocks beneath Ostrva, surrounded by the silence and majesty of the Tatras. A visit to the Symbolic Cemetery is therefore often combined with a walk around Popradské pleso, one of the most beautiful and accessible lakes in the whole Tatras.

Comfortable marked trails lead to Popradské pleso and the Symbolic Cemetery, making it an ideal destination even for families or less experienced hikers. The site combines well with further hikes along the Tatra Magistrale or ascents into neighboring valleys. If you want to experience the High Tatras fully and with humility, it's worth choosing accommodation in one of the sub-Tatra villages — you'll have this exceptional mountain corner, as well as the rest of the Tatra scenery, comfortably within reach.
