Vysoké Tatry
Zelené pleso, popularly also called Kežmarské Zelené pleso, is a charming moraine lake hidden in the Valley of Zelené pleso in the High Tatras. It lies at an elevation of 1,545 m above sea level, covers an area of 1.78 hectares, and reaches a depth of 4.5 meters, historically belonging to the cadastre of the town of Kežmarok.
The lake is known for its unmistakable scenery — the calm water surface is enclosed by steep rock walls and peaks, which reflect in it like in a giant natural mirror when there is no wind. It is precisely this combination of still water and wild Tatra crags that makes Zelené pleso one of the most photogenic corners of the entire Tatras and a sought-after destination for hikers and mountain photographers alike.
On the lake's northern shore stands Chata pri Zelenom plese, a cozy mountain hut that has for generations offered hikers refreshment, warmth, and the chance to spend the night right in the heart of the mountains. Thanks to it, a trip to the lake can be taken as a relaxed day hike, but also as a starting point for more demanding ridge crossings and ascents. The surroundings of the lake are magnificent year-round — from summer greenery to snow-covered winter scenery.
Marked trails to Zelené pleso most often lead from Tatranská Lomnica and Kežmarské Žľaby, making it well accessible even for less experienced hikers. If you want to experience the High Tatras fully, it's worth choosing accommodation in one of the sub-Tatra towns or villages: a hike to the lake and the hut by day, comfortable rest in the evening, and another of the endless Tatra excursions the next day. One day is far from enough to take in the beauty of the Tatras.
