Gýmeš

Gýmeš is an impressive castle ruin towering on the steep quartzite hill Dúň, 514 metres above sea level, on the southern slope of the Tribeč mountains. You'll find it about five kilometres north of the village of Jelenec, which was itself called Gýmeš until 1948. Thanks to its elevated position, the ruin is a striking landmark of the wider area and catches the eye from a distance.

The castle is also mentioned under other names, such as Gýmeš Castle or Jelenec Castle, and its history is tied to a prominent noble family. Gýmeš was in fact one of the ancestral castles of the Forgách family – alongside Halič Castle – making it an interesting spot for anyone drawn to the past of Hungarian nobility and the fates of old castles.

The climb up to Gýmeš passes through the forested southern slope of the Tribeč and is a pleasant, easy hike ending with a view of the remains of the once-mighty castle. From the castle hill, views open up over the surrounding countryside, and the ruin itself, with its typical romantic atmosphere, draws hikers, photographers and families looking for a combination of nature and history.

Gýmeš pairs excellently with exploring the area around Nitra and the foothills of the Tribeč, which offer a wide range of natural and cultural attractions.
