Hanigovský hrad

Hanigovce Castle, historically also known as Nový hrad or, in Latin, castrum Wywar, is a ruined castle rising above the village of Hanigovce in the Horná Torysa region, north-east of Lipany. The castle rock stands at an elevation of 771 metres at the foot of the Čergov mountains, amid the peaceful, wooded landscape of eastern Slovakia.

The castle's position on a rocky crag was no accident – an elevated spot provided both defence and a vantage point over the surroundings, which was crucial for medieval fortifications. Today only ruins remain, but together with the surrounding forest they give the site a mysterious atmosphere and make the climb up to it a pleasant hiking experience.

Marked hiking trails lead to the castle, making it well accessible on foot. You can reach it from the village of Ľutina via the yellow trail or from the village of Hanigovce via the green trail. Both routes wind through the charming nature of the Čergov mountains and reward hikers not only with the ruin itself but also with views and the calm of a mountain setting away from the main tourist crowds.

Hanigovce Castle is an ideal destination for those who enjoy combining an easy hike with discovering history. The Horná Torysa region and the Čergov mountains offer a quiet, authentic face of eastern Slovakia. Accommodation around Lipany and Sabinov makes a suitable base – from there, a trip to the castle can easily be combined with other natural and historical attractions of the region.
