Hrad Karlštejn
Karlštejn
Karlštejn is one of the most famous Czech castles, founded by Emperor Charles IV as a place to store the imperial coronation jewels and holy relics. The castle rises in cascading tiers above the Berounka valley, and its heart is the magnificently decorated Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Great Tower. Thanks to its picturesque location less than an hour from Prague, it's among the most popular full-day excursions. The village beneath the castle, with its restaurants and shops, offers a pleasant base for a visit.
