Hrušov (hrad)

Hostie

Hrušov, also known as Hrušovský hrad, is a ruined Gothic castle located on the quartzite hill Skalka above the road from Topoľčianky to Skýcov, within the cadastral territory of the village of Hostie. Hidden in the wooded surroundings of the Tribeč mountains, it's exactly the kind of mysterious castle ruin that appeals to explorers and history lovers alike.

Its position on the rocky Skalka hill once gave it natural protection and today makes it an attractive destination for a hike. The path to the castle leads mostly through forest, and the reward for the climb is the remains of the Gothic fortifications rising above the surrounding countryside. It's precisely the romantic atmosphere of the abandoned ruin and its hiding place among the trees that lend the visit its special charm.

Hrušov is a rewarding choice for hikers who enjoy the combination of nature and history and don't mind working a little for the experience. The hike suits reasonably fit visitors and can be done year-round – from spring greenery through the shade of summer forest to colourful autumn, when the area around the castle looks especially picturesque.

The Hrušov ruin pairs nicely with other attractions around Topoľčianky, such as the local manor house or the nearby Mlyňany Arboretum. If you want to explore this corner of Slovakia beneath the Tribeč more thoroughly and without rushing, it's worth choosing accommodation in the region and making the castle hike part of a pleasant multi-day stay.
