Kamenica

Kamenica Castle is a ruined castle perched on a limestone crag at 725 m above sea level, above the village of the same name, north-west of the historic town of Sabinov. It lies in the Čergov mountains and, together with the surrounding landscape, forms an impressive backdrop for this part of the Šariš region.

The castle has medieval origins, attested by its historically recorded names found in old documents – mentioned in 1270 as Thorkw or Torkueley, later as Thorku (1306), Tarkeu (1312), or Torkew and Tarkö. These shifting forms of the name reflect the centuries of its existence and the changes in language and the administrators who governed it over time.

Its position on a limestone crag was no accident. An elevated, hard-to-reach site provided natural defence and a view over the surrounding land, which was crucial for medieval castles. Today only ruins remain, but it's precisely these ruins that lend the site a romantic atmosphere, and along with the views across the countryside, make the climb a rewarding hiking destination.

Kamenica Castle is an ideal choice for history lovers and hikers who enjoy combining outdoor activity with discovering monuments. The Čergov mountains offer a peaceful setting away from the main tourist routes. Accommodation around Sabinov and the Šariš region makes a good base, letting you combine a visit to the castle ruins with further trips around this distinctive region of eastern Slovakia.
