Obrovský vodopád

Obrovský vodopád is one of the most popular and most easily accessible waterfalls in the High Tatras. It is located at the mouth of the Malá Studená dolina valley, at an altitude of about 1,330 m above sea level, and its water plunges from a height of around twenty metres. It formed in a rocky gorge carved by the Malý Studený potok stream, which feeds the waterfall year-round.

Set on a steep rocky step, the waterfall is especially impressive during spring snowmelt, when the stream carries the most water. In freezing winters it partly freezes, turning into an ice wall that attracts photographers and winter-hiking enthusiasts alike. The very name „Obrovský” (Giant) hints at the impression made by the sight of the falling water up close.

One of the most beautiful and best-known Tatra walks leads to the waterfall. Hikers usually set out from Hrebienok above Starý Smokovec, reached comfortably by funicular, and continue along a marked trail to the waterfall and onward into the Malá and Veľká Studená valleys. Thanks to its gentle elevation gain, the route is suitable even for families with children and less experienced hikers.

The waterfall lies at the heart of the Tatra National Park, within easy reach of the settlements of Starý Smokovec, Horný Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica. The surrounding area offers dense coniferous forests, mountain huts and views of the neighbouring peaks.
