Oponice Castle, also referred to as the castle at Oponice, is a ruined castle on the western spur of the Tribeč mountains above the village of Oponice. Its position on a prominent hill once guaranteed good protection, and today makes it an interesting excursion destination with views over the surrounding foothill landscape.
The castle was first documented in 1300, and its history is linked to several noble families – the Čák family, Mikuláš Gutkeled (from 1329), Dezider Kaplay (from 1389), and from 1392 Mikuláš Ewrs, founder of the Aponi family.
The climb to the castle winds through the forests of the Tribeč range, rewarding visitors with wall remnants carrying a romantic atmosphere of an abandoned ruin, plus wide views of the countryside. The hike suits regular hikers and families alike.
