Roháče

Roháče is an impressive geomorphological part of the Western Tatras and one of Slovakia's most beautiful high-mountain areas. It's dominated by the mighty Ostrý Roháč and Plačlivé, along with Volovec, Rákoň, Tri kopy, Baníkov, Skriniarky, Salatín and Brestová, which together form a classic high-mountain group with sharp ridges.

Glaciers perfectly shaped the Roháče landscape — you'll find superbly developed glacial forms, steep rocky peaks and deep valleys here. The highest peaks, Ostrý Roháč and Plačlivé, form an inseparable pair of slender rocky summits that resemble a devil's horns — and it's this fitting comparison that gave them their name. It's one of the most photogenic corners of the Tatras.

Roháče is a sought-after destination for hikers and climbers who come here for the dramatic ridges, panoramic views and untouched nature. Marked trails lead into the valleys and to more demanding peaks, so both relaxed visitors and experienced mountaineers will find something to suit them. Given the challenging high-mountain terrain, a mountain rescue service has operated here since 15 May 1954, watching over visitors' safety.

The gateway to Roháče is the village of Zuberec in Orava, known for its hospitality and the nearby Museum of the Orava Village. From here you can conveniently set off on mountain hikes or leisurely trips around the area.
