Slanický ostrov umenia

Námestovo

Slanický Island is the last remnant of the village of Slanica, which together with four other villages was flooded by the waters of the Orava Dam in the 1950s – only a hill with the Baroque Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and a calvary remained above water. The church now houses an exhibition of traditional folk sculpture and painting, the exterior features a lapidarium of Orava stonemasonry, and the former crypt holds an exhibition about the flooded villages. The island can only be reached by sightseeing boat from Slanická osada, making the visit an unforgettable experience. It's an ideal trip tip from accommodation anywhere around the Orava Dam.
