Štrbské Pleso

Štrbské Pleso is one of Slovakia's best-known mountain resorts and a major centre for tourism and winter sports in the High Tatras. It stretches along the southern shore of the lake of the same name, at an altitude of 1,346 m above sea level, making it the highest-situated tourist and spa settlement in the entire High Tatras.

Administratively, Štrbské Pleso is one of three local parts of the municipality of Štrba (alongside Štrba itself and Tatranská Štrba), and part of its cadastral territory also belongs to the town of Vysoké Tatry. Its location high in the Tatra foothills, clean mountain air, and proximity to a glacial lake have long made it a sought-after place for rest and treatment.

The settlement is known above all as a top-level venue for Nordic disciplines — cross-country skiing and ski jumping. In winter the surrounding slopes and cross-country trails fill with skiers, while in summer Štrbské Pleso serves as a comfortable starting point for numerous Tatra hikes to tarns, waterfalls and mountain huts. An easy walk around the lake itself, with views of the surrounding peaks, is among the most beautiful experiences the Tatras offer, suitable even for families with children.

Thanks to rail and cable-car connections, Štrbské Pleso is easily accessible — a rack railway and the Tatra Electric Railway link it to the villages below the Tatras.
