Tatranská Lomnica

Tatranská Lomnica is one of the largest and best-known resort settlements in the High Tatras. Today it forms part of the cadastral territory of the town of Vysoké Tatry, though until recently it was an independent municipality. It lies about 6 km east of Smokovec, right at the foot of the majestic Lomnický štít peak.

The settlement is one of the traditional centres of Tatra tourism and winter sports. From here, cable cars run toward Skalnaté pleso lake and onward to the summit of Lomnický štít, one of the highest and most popular Tatra peaks. In winter the surrounding slopes become a sought-after ski resort, while in summer they serve as a starting point for numerous hikes into the Studené doliny valleys and to Tatra mountain huts.

Tatranská Lomnica also has a scientific dimension — it is home to the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, linked to the nearby observatory at Skalnaté pleso. The combination of mountain nature, the history of Tatra tourism, and modern science gives the settlement its distinctive character.

Besides cable cars and slopes, Tatranská Lomnica offers a pleasant setting of Tatra-style villas and hotels, forest parks, relaxation areas, and convenient connections via the Tatra Electric Railway, which links the various settlements below the Tatras.
