Trnava is Slovakia's oldest free royal town and earned the nickname "Little Rome" thanks to the many churches within its walls. Well-preserved medieval fortifications, a Renaissance town tower and the Baroque Trinity Square form a charming core full of cafés and monuments. There's also the mighty Basilica of St. Nicholas and a university church with an ornate altar. As a regional capital with excellent transport links, Trnava makes a pleasant base for exploring the whole region.
