Turniansky hrad

Turniansky hrad, also known as Turňa Castle, is an impressive ruin perched on a rocky crag high above the village of Turňa nad Bodvou. It stands on a karst hill forming the south-eastern spur of the Zádiel Plateau, separated from its main massif by a distinct saddle. Its position on the edge of the Turnianska Basin gives it a dramatic silhouette visible from far away.

In the past the castle held great significance – it was the administrative centre of the Turňa comitatus and later of Turnianska County, meaning a key seat of power and administration in this corner of the region. It dates from the 13th century, and today only romantic ruins remain, telling of centuries of turbulent history on the border of Hungarian lands.

The reward for the climb is above all the view. From the castle crag there's a panorama over the Turnianska Basin, the surrounding karst plateaus and more distant hills, with the border to Hungary lying just about five kilometres away. The Slovak Karst surrounding the castle is an attraction in itself – expect unique nature, rock formations and the rich world of protected landscape here.

Turniansky hrad combines beautifully with a visit to the nearby Zádiel Valley and other gems of the Slovak Karst, making it an ideal stop on a multi-day exploration of south-eastern Slovakia. If you want to get to know the region fully, it's worth choosing accommodation around Turňa nad Bodvou or Košice and spreading your trips over a more relaxed pace – the castle then fits neatly among karst hikes and quiet evenings in nature.
