Valdštejn (hrad)

Valdštejn (German: Waldstein or Wallenstein) is a ruined castle in the Semily district near Turnov, in the Bohemian Paradise area. It is the ancestral castle of the Lords of Valdštejn, dating from the second half of the 13th century and one of the oldest castles in the entire region. The ruin is protected as a cultural monument and is today owned by the town of Turnov.

The castle's name is tied to a significant noble family, which took its name from this seat and which later played a notable role in Czech history. It is precisely Valdštejn's age that makes it such a valuable site — it stands among the witnesses to the earliest settlement of Bohemian Paradise, when the first fortified seats began rising on rocky spurs. The castle stands on sandstone rocks characteristic of this region, which on their own form an impressive backdrop.
