Važecká jaskyňa

Važecká jaskyňa is a stalactite cave in the Liptov basin near the village of Važec. It lies in the valley of the Biely Váh river on the northern edge of the Low Tatras, in the Kozie chrbty range, at an elevation of 784 meters above sea level. It is one of Liptov's popular and easily accessible show caves.

The cave was discovered by student Ondrej Húska in 1922, and just six years later it was provisionally opened to the public. After further underground spaces were discovered, it was permanently opened in 1954, and in 1968 it was granted protection as a protected natural monument. The cave is 530 meters long in total, of which 230 meters form the comfortable tour route.

The underground spaces were formed by the erosive and corrosive action of the Biely Váh waters and take the shape of low, spacious halls. Their greatest ornament is the colorful sinter decoration — glassy blue, blue-white to waxy yellow stalactites and flowstone that give the cave its unique character. Thanks to the comfortable, easy route, the tour also suits families with children or older visitors who appreciate easy access.

Važec lies right between the High and Low Tatras, making it an excellent base for mountain trips. A visit to the cave can easily be combined with hiking, excursions to nearby Tatra resorts or relaxing in Liptov's countryside.
