Vígľašský zámok

Vígľaš Castle, simply called Vígľaš, stands on the eastern edge of the village bearing the same name. It's a landmark with a turbulent history reaching back to the Middle Ages, and one that lives a new life today — transformed from a ruin into a restored castle that breathes the atmosphere of bygone times.

The castle's roots go back to the 14th century, when the original monastery building was converted into a hunting castle and royal residence. In the 16th century, anti-Ottoman battles took place around it, and a permanent military garrison was maintained there. The year 1945 proved fateful, when the castle was attacked by troops, badly damaged, and burned down. Decades of decay followed, interrupted by a partial reconstruction of the outer fortifications in 1980. A decisive turnaround came only with the complete reconstruction of the ruins in 2009, followed by occupancy approval in 2013, and in September 2014 the castle opened as the modern conference hotel The Grand Vígľaš.

Vígľaš's story is remarkable precisely for its transformation — from a royal hunting seat through wartime destruction to thorough restoration. Visitors are captivated by the castle's silhouette at the edge of the village, its walls, and the overall atmosphere of a place that combines centuries of history with today's comfort.
