Vyhlídka Máj
Krňany
The Máj Viewpoint is a rocky outlook rising high above the Vltava valley. It lies about a kilometre west of the hamlet of Teletín, within the cadastral territory of Krňany, and ranks among the best-known and most photographed spots in the whole Vltava valley in Central Bohemia.
From this rock opens one of the most famous views of the Vltava's meanders at the site of the former Svatojánské proudy (St John's Rapids). These once formed a wild and legendary stretch of the river, but today they lie submerged beneath the waters of the Štěchovice Dam. Below the rock you'll see a calm water surface winding in broad bends between steep, forested slopes. It's precisely this shot that appears on countless tourist brochures, postcards and calendars dedicated to the beauty of the Vltava valley.
The path to the viewpoint runs through pleasant forest terrain, and the reward for the climb is a panorama that rightly ranks among the iconic sights of Central Bohemia. The spot is popular among hikers, families and photographers alike — it's at its most beautiful on a clear day with a far-reaching view, or in the morning haze, when mist hovers over the river's surface.
The Máj Viewpoint lies within comfortable reach of Prague and other destinations along the Vltava, so it combines wonderfully with trips through the Vltava valley, visits to Štěchovice or the surrounding villages. If you want to enjoy this spot without the crowds and in the best light, it's worth staying overnight nearby and climbing up to the viewpoint early in the morning — sunrise over the Vltava's meanders is an experience not easily forgotten.
