Žalý (Krkonoše)
Benecko
Žalý, known in German as Heidelberg, is a mountain situated on the last spur of the Žalský ridge in the central part of the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), about 1.5 kilometres east of the village of Benecko. The German name possibly refers to the abundant presence of the bilberry, called Heidelbeere in German – and this detail alone hints that it is a peak closely tied to mountain nature.
The mountain lies within the Krkonoše National Park, one of the region's most beautiful and most protected mountain areas. It is precisely this location within the national park that gives Žalý its value: the surrounding landscape is unspoiled, with typical Krkonoše nature, and the climb up is a rewarding goal for hikers seeking a combination of exercise and beautiful views.
Žalý is a classic viewpoint worth the climb for the panorama of the surrounding mountains and ridges. Hiking in this part of the Krkonoše has its own charm in every season – from summer walks, through colourful autumn, to the winter atmosphere of snow-covered slopes. Thanks to its proximity to Benecko, Žalý is easily accessible and ranks among the popular local excursions.
Benecko and the central Krkonoše are a sought-after mountain destination with numerous trails and opportunities for an active break. If you choose accommodation right in this area, the climb up Žalý can easily be worked into a multi-day itinerary together with further hikes along the national park's ridges. A stay in the mountains thus becomes not just about a single view, but about the whole series of experiences the Krkonoše offer across the seasons.
