Zoologická záhrada Bratislava
Bratislava
Bratislava Zoo is one of the most popular family outings in the capital. Located at the foot of the Malé Karpaty mountains, it's a genuine natural-setting zoo spanning 96 hectares, alternating between deciduous forest, open meadow, cool valley and natural ponds. As a result, a walk here feels as much like a trip into nature as a visit to animal exhibits, and it draws visitors year-round. Around 320,000 people visit annually.
It opened its gates for the first time on 9 May 1960, and has since played an important role in active nature conservation. Its mission is to connect the world of animals, people and nature through knowledge and positive experiences – through a high standard of animal care, endangered-species rescue programmes and quality education for visitors of all ages.
Today the zoo cares for over 1,100 individuals from around 185 species. Among its most prized residents are the addax, Sumatran orangutan, golden-cheeked gibbon, pygmy hippopotamus, Sri Lankan leopard, Turkmen kulan and Visayan warty pig. Bratislava Zoo is also the only one in Slovakia where you can see chimpanzees, giraffes and rhinos – usually the biggest draw for children.
The grounds at the foot of the Malé Karpaty can keep the whole family entertained for a full day and combine easily with exploring Bratislava and its surroundings. If you're planning a longer trip to the capital, comfortable accommodation nearby lets you enjoy the zoo without rushing and add further regional tips to your visit.
