Belianske Tatry
Ždiar
The Belianske Tatry are a mountain range of the Eastern Tatras in the northwest of eastern Slovakia. Unlike their granite neighbors, they are distinguished above all by their limestone bedrock, which gives them a distinctive character — sharp ridges, white rock walls, and unique flora. The range covers an area of 64 km², making it a relatively compact yet striking mountain group.
The highest peak of the Belianske Tatry is Havran, at 2,151.5 m above sea level. Interestingly, this summit is off-limits to hikers — precisely for nature conservation reasons. The Belianske Tatry are among the most scientifically valuable and sensitive parts of the Tatras, which is why most of the range is closed to free access, helping preserve its unique plant and animal life.
The range has historically been known by many names — from the Belianske Alps and Ždiarske Tatry to the German Bélaer Kalkalpen or the Hungarian Bélai-havasok — reflecting its position at a historical crossroads of cultures. Today it forms a picturesque backdrop to the village of Ždiar and the surrounding settlements, which have preserved their Goral character.
The Belianske Tatry can be admired mainly from their foothills, accessible trails, and viewpoints around Ždiar. For visitors this means that even without climbing the closed peaks, they can enjoy an impressive panorama. Accommodation right in Ždiar or in the villages beneath the Tatras is an ideal base for exploring this quieter yet remarkably charming side of the Tatras — combined with excursions into neighboring valleys and resorts.
