Hlbočiansky vodopád

Hlbočiansky vodopád is a small yet all the more precious natural gem – it is in fact the only waterfall in the entire Malé Karpaty (Small Carpathians). It is located in the Hlbočianska valley near Smolenice in the Trnava district and stands roughly nine metres tall.

It is an intermittent waterfall, and its flow depends on the strength of the Hlbočiansky spring. It is best seen after heavy rainfall or during spring snowmelt, when the stream carries plenty of water; in drier periods its flow can be quite weak. This very variability gives the place its charm and rewards those who arrive at the right time.

The area around Smolenice is among the most beautiful parts of the Small Carpathians. A pleasant walk through the forested valley leads to the waterfall, and the trip can easily be combined with a visit to the famous Smolenice Castle, the Driny Cave, or the surrounding viewpoints and vineyards.

To fully discover the Small Carpathians, it's worth staying right around Smolenice or Trnava. The region offers a dense network of hiking trails, cycling routes and wineries, so the nine-metre Hlbočiansky vodopád can be just one of many stops during a pleasant weekend getaway.
