Hrad Špilberk

Špilberk is a castle and fortress that form an unmissable landmark of Brno. Standing atop the hill of the same name in the Brno-střed district, it has defined the Moravian capital's skyline for centuries. Visitors are drawn not only by its mighty walls but also by the rich and at times dark story that unfolded here.

The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century by the Margrave of Moravia and later King of Bohemia, Přemysl Otakar II. Over the centuries it underwent major transformations: from a leading Gothic royal castle in Moravia, it became a formidable Baroque fortress in the second half of the 17th century. Although besieged several times, it was never conquered. At the end of the 18th century its casemates were converted into a feared prison that left a permanent mark on the history of Central Europe.

Today Špilberk ranks among the city's most valuable monuments – in 1962 it was declared, along with its surrounding park, a national cultural monument. It now houses the Brno City Museum, so besides the castle interiors and casemates you can also explore exhibitions charting Brno's history. The castle ramparts offer lovely views over the city.
