Hrubá Skála (zámek)

Hrubá Skála is a chateau by the village of the same name, in the Semily district of the Liberec Region. It stands on the eastern edge of the Hruboskalsko nature reserve, at the heart of Bohemian Paradise, on the sandstone bedrock so typical of this area. It grew out of a remodelling of Skála Castle, built here in the 14th century by the Lords of Valdštejn, one of the region's important noble families.

The chateau thus combines a distant medieval past with later alterations that turned it into a more comfortable manor house. Its position directly on the sandstone rocks above the valley is the main reason the place feels so striking — the building and the rocky outcrop form one inseparable whole here. It's precisely this fusion of architecture and wild nature that gives Hrubá Skála its distinctive character.

The surrounding Hruboskalsko nature reserve is one of the best-known rock towns of Bohemian Paradise. A maze of sandstone towers, viewpoints, and forest trails draws hikers and climbers alike, and the chateau serves as their natural gateway. Viewpoints around the area open up views of both the rock towers and the residence itself, which seems to grow straight out of the rock. The surroundings offer both peaceful walks and more demanding routes.

Thanks to its location, Hrubá Skála is an ideal starting point for exploring Bohemian Paradise. The rock town, nearby castles, and viewpoints can be combined into a multi-day journey.
