Jeskyně Balcarka

Balcarka Cave lies south of the village of Ostrov u Macochy, in the northeastern part of the Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area. Its entrance opens right in the core of the rocky meander of the Suchý žleb valley, known as Balcarova skála. It is one of five caves in the Moravian Karst open to the public, so you can visit it on a guided tour.

Its formation was shaped by the waters of the Lopač and Krasovský streams. Their sinkholes are found today north and south of the cave, so the underground space itself is the work of flowing water that carved its way through the limestone over millennia. It is to this slow process that Balcarka owes its reputation: for the richness of its dripstone decoration it is often nicknamed the cave with the most abundant decoration in the area.

On the tour you'll pass through halls and corridors full of stalactites, stalagmites and other sinter formations that stand out in all their variety under the subdued lighting. The surroundings of the cave form the wooded canyon of Suchý žleb, itself an inviting destination for a walk and for photographing the rock walls.
