Kalvária (Nitra)

Nitra

Nitra's Calvary is one of the city's best-known landmarks. Built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, it spreads over a rocky hill in the southeastern part of the city bearing the same name.

Older sacred buildings preceded the calvary's construction here. At the foot of the hill stands the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, first documented as early as the 12th century, next to the Mission House of the Mother of God.

The biggest draw is undoubtedly the view – the hill opens a panorama over the entire city, the nearby Mt Zobor, and the wider surroundings of Nitra. The path up runs past the individual calvary stations.

The Calvary lies right in Nitra, making it an easily reachable destination even on a short visit. Accommodation in and around Nitra gives you a comfortable base from which to climb the Calvary first thing in the morning or at sunset.
