Kateřinská jeskyně
Vavřinec (Moravský kras)
The Kateřinská Cave is located in the northern part of the Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area, north of Brno and close to the district town of Blansko. It lies at the end of Suchý žleb, southeast of the Skalní mlýn information centre, making it easily accessible and a natural stop on any circuit of the most beautiful spots in the Moravian Karst.
About 300 metres before the confluence of the karst canyons Suchý and Pustý žleb near Skalní mlýn, its striking eight-metre-high entrance opens in the right-hand slope of the valley. The Kateřinská Cave is an outflow cave of the Punkva River: in the geological past the river flowed out of the Macocha Abyss via still-unknown passages toward the southwest, exiting precisely through the Kateřinská Cave into Suchý žleb. Tours are run by the Cave Administration of the Czech Republic.
What impresses visitors most is the sheer scale of the underground space — the tall entrance already hints that a generously proportioned cave shaped by flowing water lies within. A guided tour is pleasant in any season, and visitors will especially appreciate the constant, cooler underground temperature on hot summer days.
Thanks to its location near Skalní mlýn, the Kateřinská Cave combines wonderfully with other attractions of the Moravian Karst, including the Macocha Abyss and nearby caves. If you want to explore the region without rushing, it's worth staying overnight right in the Blansko area — from a peaceful base, the underground treasures and forested canyons of the Moravian Karst will be conveniently within reach throughout your stay.
