Ľubovniansky skanzen

The Ľubovňa Open-Air Museum is an ethnographic exhibition set in nature, showcasing the cultural richness of an ethnically mixed region on the border of the north-eastern Spiš and north-western Šariš areas. For centuries Slovaks, Germans, Rusyns, Gorals and Jews lived side by side here, and the museum sensitively recalls this unique diversity of life.

The exhibition includes fifteen houses that illustrate traditional folk architecture, ways of living and the everyday life of the region's inhabitants. The jewel of the museum is a Greek Catholic wooden church moved here from the village of Matysová, dating from 1833 and dedicated to St Michael the Archangel. This wooden church lends the site a peaceful, almost sacred atmosphere and is its most striking symbol.

What makes the museum especially interesting is that it doesn't depict just one culture, but brings together monuments of several nations that shared this land for generations. As a result, it offers a complete picture of the coexistence of different ethnic groups and religions in Slovakia's north-eastern corner – a theme that is especially characteristic of this region.

The Ľubovňa Open-Air Museum is located in Stará Ľubovňa, right next to the well-known Ľubovňa Castle, so both sights can easily be combined into a single trip.
