Morské oko (jazero)

Remetské Hámre

Morské oko is a mountain lake hidden in the forests of the Vihorlat Mountains in eastern Slovakia. It is the largest lake in this range and the third-largest natural lake in all of Slovakia — surpassed only by Štrbské pleso and Veľké Hincovo pleso in the High Tatras. Surrounded by dense forest, the still surface feels peaceful and almost fairy-tale-like.

In the past the lake was known as Veľké Vihorlatské jazero, and to this day it remains one of the most beautiful natural spots in the country. It has kept the romance and natural charm that draw hikers, photographers, and families looking for a break from the crowds. The calm water, mirroring the surrounding slopes, is a place where time seems to slow down.

A pleasant forest trail leads to Morské oko, popular precisely for its easy pace and atmosphere. The surroundings offer the shade of old beech forests, fresh air, and paths that continue on to the nearby Vihorlat peaks. It's an ideal destination for a summer trip, when the cool water and deep forest bring welcome refreshment.

The starting point for the lake is the area near the village of Remetské Hámre and the surrounding Vihorlat valleys. Morské oko pairs perfectly with other hikes across the Zemplín region, visits to nearby forests, and exploring this range's volcanic origins. If you want to enjoy this corner of Slovakia without the rush, it's worth booking accommodation nearby and setting out for the lake early in the morning — while the surface is still calm and the forest belongs to you alone.
