Slanec (hrad)

Slanec Castle, also known as Slanecký hrad, is the ruin of a Gothic castle rising on a hill above the village of the same name, east of Košice. It belongs to those castles where little survives, but what remains is striking – its dominant tower, visible from afar, still lures visitors to a short but rewarding climb.

The castle dates from the 13th century and for centuries guarded the roads in the area. Its story took a turn in 1679, when it was destroyed, and from then on it gradually fell into decay. Even so, one of its most valuable parts has survived – a three-storey tower along with several sections of wall that recall the site's former form.

Architecturally, the castle features a Gothic pointed window arch, a detail that will delight any history lover. The tower itself serves as a natural viewpoint: from the castle hill there's a view of the Slanské vrchy hills, the surrounding villages and the wide landscape of the Košice region. The path up leads through a pleasant forest and is manageable even for families with children.

Slanec is easily reached from Košice, making the castle an ideal destination for a half-day trip. It can easily be combined with discovering other monuments and natural attractions of the Zemplín and Abov regions.
