Sovinec (hrad)

Sovinec Castle, known in German as Eulenburg, stands in the village of the same name in the Nízký Jeseník region, about fourteen kilometres south of Rýmařov towards Uničov. It ranks among the notable monuments of this foothill region, and its very location hints at a long and turbulent history.

The castle was built in the first third of the 14th century. Over time it underwent several transformations — later expanded in late Gothic and Renaissance style, and finally rebuilt in early Baroque form, with its fortifications dating from 1632 to 1643. Sovinec also experienced hard times: it burned down in 1784 and again in 1945. Despite this, it retained its monumental character and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1963.
