Levoča is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval town in the Spiš region, whose historic reserve is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Basilica of St. James houses the world's tallest wooden Gothic altar, a masterpiece by the woodcarver Master Paul of Levoča. The spacious square is lined with burgher houses, a town hall with Renaissance arcades, and churches steeped in history. The town is an ideal base for exploring Spiš, the nearby Spiš Castle, and the Slovak Paradise.
