Vimperk Chateau spreads across a hill above the town of the same name, known as the Gateway to Šumava. Originally a medieval castle, it underwent Renaissance and Baroque rebuilding and, after extensive restoration, is open to the public once more. Its halls house the Šumava Museum, with exhibitions on the history of glassmaking, printing and the region's nature. Vimperk is a natural starting point for trips into central Šumava, making it a good base for nearby accommodation.
