Bučací vodopády

The Bučací Waterfalls are a cascading waterfall system on the Bučací stream in the Beskydy Mountains, within the cadastral area of Ostravice. They are found in the massif of Mount Smrk (1,277 m), in the basin of the eponymous stream, at an elevation of around 800 metres. They rank among the largest cascade waterfall systems in this part of the Carpathians – the two main steps together measure 9 metres, while the total height of the cascade system reaches about 40 metres.

The waterfalls formed in steep, forested terrain where hard Godula sandstones alternate with less resistant shales. It is this geological contrast that gave the stream its dramatic drop. The surrounding steep slopes are covered mainly by beech and maple forest, lending the place a calm, almost primeval atmosphere, especially striking after heavy rain or during spring snowmelt, when the flow is at its strongest.

The area is part of the Bučací potok nature reserve, declared on 20 September 2004, which guarantees its protection from human intervention. A forest road leads to the waterfalls between the junction known as Nad Holubčankou and the nearby cottage settlement of Na Skalce, making them accessible on foot as part of a hike.

The Bučací Waterfalls are a rewarding destination for hikers who enjoy discovering the lesser-known natural corners of the Beskydy Mountains off the main trails. A visit pairs easily with an ascent of Smrk or a ramble along the surrounding Beskydy ridges. Choosing accommodation in Ostravice or one of the nearby villages beneath the mountains puts the trailheads right at your doorstep, letting you spend the whole day in nature instead of travelling.
